Sugar in Fiji

Growing sugar in the hills and valleys of a vast and undulating landscape requires committed and intensive labour.
Men and women joining to clear cane patches that machinery could not navigate.
Piling the trucks for the sugar factory.  Cane farmers are paid about $44USD per tonne of cane according to the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

Trucks from fields around Labasa, Vanua Levu, wait in long lines to deliver their load.  The country has four mills, one in Vanua Levu and three in Viti Levu, to crush the loads that are delivered.

Not all of the trucks make it.  On the road, the uneven load and road surface topple a heavily loaded truck.  No one was hurt.

Some cane farmers use the sugar train.  Track repair and maintenance must be a nightmare.

One of my favourite Fijian delights - Cream buns - wonderful with a strong cup of coffee in the morning.  Sweetened cream in a lightly sweetened bread.  Thanks cane industry!
