Death in Fiji

The location of Vatuwaqa Cemetery and cremation grounds can be found here.  The grounds are so attractive from the bus-route with the colourful grave-skirts blowing in the wind.  The graves are well taken care of, and unlike our TT cemeteries, there's no evidence of liming or homelessness.

Homelessness in Suva City Centre - Passive Observation

Fiji court buildings.  City Centre, Suva.

A few men sleeping on cardboard sheets around the courthouse.  I don't know what this means in Suva - are they security, persons waiting for something, or are they homeless?  Who are these men, do they work, what villages are they from and why are they here?

This fellow was pulling the pineapples that people had eaten their ice-creams out of during the ROC market and finishing them off.  It makes sense.  There was a lot of pineapple left  back after finishing the ice cream.  Is he homeless?  Is he well?  His behaviour was erratic.  Sympathies for the men sleeping on the ground and eating from the garbage were low/hostile from passers-by.

ROC Market - Loftus Street Suva - outside of the Republic of Cappuccino - Every third Sunday of the month

The most tropical kind of "cone" for your coconut ice-cream.  Oh yeah.  Suva City (every 3rd Sunday) ROCs! - pun intended!

Flowers, crafts, food for sale at the ROC market. One street, but pretty good.  I enjoyed it and had great company - Thank you Archana Priyadarshani!

The Lali - A drum bell

The Lali, a wooden drum bell lays in the foreground.  It was damaged during Winston and will be re-hung in the Lali-house in the mid-ground in front of the village church.  The Lali is an important cultural symbol in traditional Fijian villages, and it is rung to call members to community gatherings.  This youtube link is a great video of the Lali being rung.
